Tryon
Part of a group of communities known as "the String of Pearls," Tryon, NC, is a picturesque and community-oriented town in Polk County. First viewed by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540, the area that would become Tryon was a beautiful place of forests and moderate climate. Today, Tryon still boasts a favorable climate and pristine landscape that attracts many to the area.
A quieter, community-oriented town, Tryon enjoys a wealth of activities and cultural opportunities. Equestrian lovers will find a paradise of rolling landscapes and miles of riding trails, along with wonderful local facilities for training, showing and riding. Golf is also a very popular sport in the Tryon area, and some of the nation's most beautiful courses are located here.
Those who enjoy fine food and wine will note that Tryon is quickly becoming a destination for wine production. The mild temperatures and thermal belts that encircle the area provide an exceptional environment for wine grapes to grow. Two wineries, Rockhouse and Green Creek, are well known throughout the state for their quality wines. Delicious restaurants and quaint shops are also a staple for the area.
The arts are very important to Tryon residents, and performances at the Tryon Fine Arts Center attract a devoted following. Art galleries dot the historic downtown streets and showcase some of the area's famous artisans.
Education is a priority for Tryon and surrounding Polk County, and public schools are consistently rated in the Top 10 for the state of North Carolina. St. Luke's Hospital provides residents with state-of-the-art medical care, and there are several local medical facilities that provide highly rated family and continuing care. Several grocery stores are conveniently located a short drive away, and visitors will find excellent local lodging.
